Tech: Do They Hate Ass & Mule More Than The B?

[The dog being hung by Michael Vick is the Ags' beloved Miss Reveille. Hat tip to Burnt Orange Nation. - Eds.] Apparently Texas Tech fans have actually made the above t-shirt for the game against the Ags. Wow. I don't think we polite partisans of the B can match that type of hatred. Or can we? By the way, here is basically how rivalries work in the Lone Star State:

Texas. They consider themselves rivals with OU. Hence the chant of "OU Sucks" during almost all their fan traditions. Seem to be oblivious to A&M until they lose occasionally to the Soljah Boys from College Station.

Ass & Mule. Duh. If a song with the refrain of "Saw Varsity's Horns Off" doesn't convince you who they think they compete with, then you haven't spent much time in the Mighty State.

Baylor. We think our rival is the Ags. They think we are a JuCo team. They have whooped us something like 20 out of the last 21 times in football. Lately they've been owning us in men's and women's hoops as well. This rivalry peaked in the 1920s when a brawl between our schools in Waco lead to an Aggie fatality.

Tech. They cherish their victories over A&M and seem to despise Ags for being the inauthentic Rural White Male School of Texas. A&M tries to pretend that Tech doesn't exist, though this may be the closest thing to a rivalry in both pigskin and hoops. Be sure to check out Oso Amigos Double-T Nation and DiscoTech! for coverage of this emerging rivalry.

  • You're incorrect on the Texas front -- OU is seldom mentioned. A reference to TAMU is formally in the fight song, but only on OU weekend are the lyrics typically altered to remind the listener that OU sucks. Most of the time, those same lyrics are altered to remind the listener to make the opponent eat shit. So to speak.

  • I've been trying to live up to our end of the challenge. I hope we're doing alright.

I hope you especially liked the pics of the vadalism of our University icons - mostly I hope the sactimonious Ags see those...

  • Anon:

I have been to Baylor vs. UT basketball, football and baseball games where the phrase "OU Sucks" and "OU Still Sucks" were used quite liberally by the horn faithful.

    BJB:

You sir, are doing the Lord's work. Keep it up and you will be King of the Aggie Haters!

  • Truth about the shirt, i stopped a girl on campus today at the B and asked how she got one in waco so quickly

  • The Sand Ags have taken the hatred for their cousins "the Land Ags" to a whole new level. At least they have some semblance of free speech at Tech, though. At UT, they would "Vick" any student who wore that shirt ... on the spot.

Who would have thought that the jealousy of one cousin's ability to pass and another cousin's ability to run (esp. when both are defenseless) would have spawned such a nasty feud?

But ... I do enjoy the Sand Ag-Land Ag inter-family squabble. A little shootout in the trailer park from time to time keeps things interstin' around Texas.

As for the B ... I am trying to come up with your nearest cousin/soul mate in the Univ world, and it would appear to be Rice ... but without the beer, brains and the baseball team.

  • Great analysis and wit, B. Orange.

Rice is kinda like us but less religious and uptight, much smarter, and much less distinctively Texan.

Being the eldest daughter of the TX College scene, we take pride in our pedigree and in defining success by our own standards.

  • I think TCU should be Baylor's chief rival. The Baylor/TCU rivalry was one of the nation's oldest continuous rivalries in football before the SWC broke up. Yet one more reason I weep for the SWC days. It's too bad the two schools don't play each other non-conference every season.

  • Yeah, TCU would be perfect, except SMU are their natural rival, given the shared Metro area and their great "Iron Skillet" rivalry.

We did share a common city until 1910. Damn quitters. Waco is for those with commitment. FTW is just too easy to flee to when things got hot (like your school burning down).

  • I think any rivalry that involves someone getting killed should be at the top of any other rivalry. That is why BU/atm stands alone.

    Sic'em / Kill'em Bears

  • I must admit, I do envy the Bears ... for our Horns have never actually slain an Ag in football combat to my knowledge.

However, I have run into some former Land Ag linemen who have obviously been repeatedly pile driven on their head by UT linemen and have the mental faculties to prove it.

Red, thanks for the kind words. This is a great, hilarious blog. I started reading a bit back when the Disco Tech (Sand Ag) guys linked. My alma mater could learn a bit from the B, in terms of not taking ourselves so dang seriously and also taking the Almighty a bit more seriously.

Will be checking in as the annual UT-Baylor grudge match nears.

    Peace,

  • I'm anon 7:03. Red, if you're really hearing Horns fans sticking "OU Sucks" in the fight song at Baylor games, they must be just showing respect to the Baptist institution by not yelling "make 'em eat shit!" as they should. That's just the way it's been since I first got my UT season tix back in 92.

-- Long time Horns fan, but actual Baylor grad -- and conflicted about what color to wear on the 20th.
